Becoming a Nurse

Becoming a Nurse

Nursing is a very unique career path anywhere in the world. Nurses are an integral part of the society in which they belong. Working as a nurse is very important because you are working to save life and you are well rewarded for your effort though the instrumentality of adequate remuneration.

All over the world, the steps required to become a nurse are similar. However, I shall be focusing mainly on the methods required to become a nurse in the United States of America.

There are different kinds of nurses that one can become if one is interested. Each of these kinds of nursing require different education and criteria. The different kinds of nursing are:

  • Registered Nurse
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Licensed Vocational Nurse
  • Certified Medical Assistant

From the above, you can select the kind of nurse that best fits into your overall goals.

In order for you to work as a nurse, you need to have something like a college education. To do this, you can choose from the numerous nursing degrees out there. Some of them include:

  • Master of Science in Nursing
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing
  • Doctorate of Nursing Practice
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Certificate of Nursing.

In getting you nursing degree, you would have clinical sessions which would serve as a practical class for applying what you learnt in the class/online. Things that you would learn about include medical care, medical terminology, and medical equipment and so on.

When you are done with the above, you would need to take a professional exam to make you certified as a nurse. You can get by without getting certified, however, more opportunities are open too those that are certified. For those that make use of certification, it is sort of a proof that they know what nursing is all about.

The next step is for you to get a job. By the time you have finished securing all your credentials, you can begin work as a nurse. If you do not find a work in the area in which you have your specialty, you can work as a general healthcare nurse for the time being. This is good because from working here, you would gain more experience. With this experience you can always get the specific job that you need. Employers are more prone to go for those with experience than for those that only have their experience on their certificate.

After gaining employment, you shouldn’t give up on getting more knowledge. The basic nursing degree that you have may not be enough to take you to the required that you want to get to in your career. Make sure you continue going to school and specialized classes as this would later set you apart as a professional.

In all, becoming a nurse is a very huge decision for anyone to make in life. The hope is that by going through the above, whoever the reader is, now has an idea of steps required to be a nurse.
